These minerals are essential for batteries and renewable energy technologies. Yet, the mining sector in the DRC faces serious challenges that threaten its efficiency and sustainability. Mines in the southern Copperbelt, especially in Katanga, depend heavily on imported chemicals and machinery. Sulfur-based chemicals like sulfuric acid are critical for cobalt processing, while specialized mining equipment keeps operations running. These inputs mostly come from Asia and Europe and arrive at East African ports such as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Durban in South Africa, and Beira in Mozambique.
The journey from port to mine is long and difficult. Poor road and rail infrastructure causes delays and increases costs. For example, shipments must travel thousands of kilometers over roads that are often in bad condition, especially during the rainy season. This vulnerability to climate impacts adds unpredictability to supply schedules.
Global shipping routes also create risks. The Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint, frequently experiences geopolitical tensions that delay chemical shipments. Such disruptions can halt mining operations, affecting global supply chains for electric vehicle batteries and other clean energy technologies.
Outbound Mineral Export Routes
Exporting copper and cobalt from the DRC involves several major corridors, each with unique challenges:
Dar es Salaam Corridor (Tanzania)
This route is vital but congested. Heavy traffic and limited infrastructure capacity slow down mineral shipments, increasing transit times and costs.
Durban Route (South Africa)
Minerals travel over 2,500 kilometers on this long-haul route. The extended distance contributes to high transportation emissions, making it one of the largest sources of carbon output in some mining companies’ value chains.
Beira Corridor (Mozambique)
This corridor relies on a mix of road and rail transport. While rail can be more efficient, the network suffers from maintenance issues and occasional disruptions.
Lobito Corridor (Angola)
Recently reopened, this corridor connects the Copperbelt directly to the Atlantic Ocean. It offers a shorter route for Western supply chains but faces challenges such as track vulnerabilities and climate-related disruptions. Infrastructure upgrades are needed to improve its reliability.

The DRC’s mining sector is entirely land-linked for imports and exports, making it highly sensitive to geopolitical factors. The cost and availability of insurance, tariffs, and political stability in transit countries directly affect mining operations. For example, political unrest or border closures in neighboring countries can block export routes, causing delays and price volatility.
Pricing pressures also come from global demand for cobalt and copper. As demand rises for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, prices can fluctuate sharply. This volatility affects investment decisions and the ability of mining companies to plan long-term infrastructure improvements.
Infrastructure Deficits and Climate Vulnerability
Infrastructure remains a major bottleneck. Many roads and railways were built decades ago and have not kept pace with growing mining output. Poor maintenance and limited investment mean that transport networks are fragile. Seasonal rains can wash out roads and damage rail lines, halting shipments for days or weeks.
Climate change increases these risks. More frequent and intense storms threaten both inbound supply chains and outbound export routes. Without resilient infrastructure, the sector will face ongoing disruptions that ripple through global supply chains.

Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts from governments, mining companies, and international partners. Some practical steps include:

Using multiple ports and corridors can reduce dependence on any single route vulnerable to disruption.
